HACKENSACK, N.J. — Bergen County Democrats swept all five countywide seats Tuesday, keeping Republicans out of county government and extending a winning streak that dates back more than a decade.

County Executive James Tedesco III led the Democratic victories, defeating Republican Todd Hennessey with 196,041 votes to Hennessey's 108,589, according to unofficial Bergen County election results.

Tedesco captured more than 64% of the vote, securing a fourth term in the county's top elected office.

When his new term begins in January, Tedesco, a former Paramus mayor first elected county executive in 2014, will become Bergen County's longest-serving county executive, surpassing Republican William "Pat" Schuber's 12-year tenure.

The Democrats also retained the county clerk's office, with incumbent John Hogan defeating Republican Timothy Walsh.

In the race for county surrogate, Democrat Linda Schwager defeated Republican Joseph Stephen Conte, receiving 187,838 votes to Conte's 113,319.

Schwager, a former Oakland mayor, will take over an office long held by Democrat Michael Dressler, who died in December 2025 after nearly three decades in the position.

Democrats also won both available seats on the Bergen County Board of Commissioners.

Incumbent Joan Voss led the four-candidate field with 187,891 votes, followed by fellow Democrat Rafael Marte with 185,204.

Republicans John Dinice and Maria Soledad Laman finished well behind, receiving 112,342 and 111,344 votes, respectively.

The results preserve the Democrats' 7-0 control of the county commissioner board and leave Republicans without a single countywide elected seat.

The GOP has not won a Bergen Countywide election since 2013, a striking reversal for a county that was once a Republican stronghold.

Tuesday's results also showed the strength of the Democratic organization across Bergen County, even as individual municipal races produced more competitive contests and some Republican victories.

The results are based on Bergen County's unofficial November 3, 2026 election report, refreshed at 10:21 p.m., and include early voting, Election Day ballots and partial mail-in results.
