TENAFLY, N.J. — Rep. Josh Gottheimer won reelection Tuesday, securing a sixth term in Congress after defeating Republican Sean Kirrane and independent Adam Rueda in New Jersey's 5th Congressional District.

The Tenafly Democrat dominated the Bergen County portion of the district, receiving 143,110 votes, or 65.57%, according to unofficial county election results.

Kirrane finished a distant second with 68,403 votes, or 31.34%, while Rueda received 6,642 votes, or 3.04%.

Gottheimer's Bergen County margin over Kirrane was 74,707 votes.

The victory marked Gottheimer's first general election since his unsuccessful campaign for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in 2025.

Gottheimer first won his congressional seat in 2016, unseating Republican incumbent Scott Garrett in a closely watched race that helped put Bergen County at the center of New Jersey's congressional politics.

He has held the seat ever since, building a formidable fundraising operation and consistently winning the Bergen County vote.

His latest campaign was no exception.

Gottheimer entered the final stretch with a substantial financial advantage over Kirrane, following a gubernatorial campaign that had already brought significant attention to his fundraising operation.

The 5th Congressional District includes much of northern Bergen County and portions of Passaic and Sussex counties.

While the district once leaned Republican, redistricting following the 2020 census strengthened its Democratic makeup.

For Gottheimer, Tuesday's result means another two years in Washington after his unsuccessful attempt to move from Congress to the governor's office.

The Bergen County vote totals are based on Bergen County's unofficial November 3, 2026 election report, refreshed at 10:21 p.m., and include early voting, Election Day ballots and partial mail-in results.
