MOONACHIE, NJ — A 30-year-old California man was identified Thursday as the civilian fatally shot by a New Jersey State Police detective in Moonachie, as the Attorney General's Office released new details about the encounter.
Roberto Castro-Quinonez, of Bakersfield, California, was shot Wednesday evening near Gotham Parkway and West Commercial Avenue, according to the state.
At approximately 5:15 p.m., two New Jersey State Police detectives were conducting a criminal investigation in the area while working in plain clothes, the Attorney General's Office said.
Castro-Quinonez approached one of the detectives, leading to an interaction between the two. A second detective arrived to assist, and shortly afterward one of the detectives fired his department-issued weapon twice, striking Castro-Quinonez.
Officers attempted to provide medical aid, but Castro-Quinonez was pronounced dead at 5:44 p.m.
The identity of the detective who fired the shots has not been released.
The shooting was initially reported as an incident in which a man was shot by state police in Carlstadt before crashing his vehicle into a building in neighboring Moonachie. The state has not provided further details about the events leading up to the encounter.
Under New Jersey law, the Attorney General's Office is required to investigate deaths occurring during encounters with law enforcement officers acting in their official capacity. The investigation must be presented to a grand jury to determine whether the evidence supports criminal charges against the officer involved.
The investigation remains ongoing.
