BERGENFIELD, N.J. — A Dumont man driving a stolen car was busted during a traffic stop in Bergenfield, leading police to connect him to a break-in at a local used car dealership just one night earlier, authorities said Wednesday.
Mohamed Eltoukhy, 33, was arrested early Monday, Oct. 19, after Officer Jean Baptiste pulled him over around 12:25 a.m. for several traffic violations.
Police quickly discovered the 2011 Mazda 3 he was driving had been reported stolen from a Bergenfield street about 12 hours earlier.
But the investigation didn't stop there.
Detectives also linked Eltoukhy to an overnight break-in at AA Discount Auto Sales, located at 230 S. Washington Avenue, where someone had forced open a rear door and damaged several vehicles.
Police had responded to a burglar alarm at the dealership around 2:23 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, finding the back door forced open, several car doors left open and damaged steering columns on multiple vehicles.
The damage was estimated at $3,500, although an employee initially reported that nothing appeared to have been stolen.
Later that morning, around 11 a.m., a Bergenfield resident reported that a 2011 Mazda 3 had been stolen from the street near his home. Police listed the vehicle's value at $22,000.
The following night, Baptiste spotted the stolen Mazda during a traffic stop and arrested Eltoukhy without incident.
A follow-up investigation tied him to both the Mazda theft and the dealership burglary, police said.
Officers also allegedly found Eltoukhy in possession of burglary tools, drug paraphernalia and suspected crack cocaine.
He was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, six counts of burglary, three counts of criminal mischief and one count each of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of burglary tools.
Eltoukhy also received traffic summonses for improper passing, careless driving, fictitious license plates, failure to possess insurance, failure to possess registration and having a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle.
He was taken to the Bergen County Jail pending an appearance in Superior Court in Hackensack.
Bergenfield police detectives and the Bergen County Sheriff's Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted in the investigation.
