HACKENSACK, N.J. — The suspect who allegedly smashed a jewelry display case at Riverside Square Mall, triggering a massive police response after shoppers mistook the sound for gunfire, remained at large Tuesday as Hackensack detectives continued investigating.

Hackensack Deputy Police Chief Gregory Zisa provided additional details in a statement , confirming that no gunshots were fired during the incident.

According to police, the suspect entered Bloomingdale’s, smashed a display case and stole various jewelry items. The sound of the case shattering led multiple patrons to call 911 and report what they believed were gunshots.

No one was injured during the theft.

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Department, Regional SWAT team and surrounding police agencies responded to the mall to assist Hackensack officers.

Zisa thanked the agencies for their “prompt response and assistance” as investigators worked to determine what happened.

The mall has since resumed normal operations.

Police said the matter remains under investigation by Hackensack detectives and the suspect had not been apprehended as of the latest update.

There is no cause for public alarm, police said.

The incident had prompted precautionary lockdowns at some Bergen County yeshiva day schools after reports of a possible active shooter spread through the community.
