HACKENSACK, N.J. — ALL CLEAR: A smash-and-grab jewelry robbery at Riverside Square Mall sparked a major police response Tuesday afternoon after the sound of a shattered display case was mistaken for gunfire, sending multiple shoppers scrambling to call 911.

Some Bergen County yeshiva day schools also temporarily went into precautionary lockdowns as reports of a possible active shooter spread.

Hackensack police, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department, the Regional SWAT team and surrounding law enforcement agencies responded to the mall following reports of gunshots.

But there was no shooting.

Officers determined that a suspect had entered Bloomingdale’s, smashed a jewelry display case and stole several pieces of jewelry before fleeing, Hackensack Deputy Police Chief Gregory Zisa said.

The sound of the case shattering caused multiple people inside the mall to report what they believed were gunshots, police said.

No injuries were reported.

The suspect remained at large Tuesday afternoon as Hackensack detectives investigated the robbery.

The mall has since resumed normal operations and police said there is no cause for public alarm.

The incident briefly caused concern across Bergen County as reports of a possible shooting spread, prompting schools and community institutions to take precautions while police determined what had happened.
