HACKENSACK, NJ — A Hackensack woman is accused of slipping a powerful sedative into an acquaintance’s tea during a dispute over suspicious banking activity, leaving the victim hospitalized for days, authorities said.
Rohweniven Bacani, 52, was charged with third-degree aggravated assault following a weeks-long investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and Leonia police.
The alleged poisoning occurred Sept. 8, when the two women met at a restaurant in Fort Lee to discuss unauthorized activity the victim had discovered in her financial accounts, which Bacani had shared access to, according to prosecutors.
Bacani was already at the restaurant when the victim arrived and had a cup of tea waiting for her, investigators said.
The victim drank some of the beverage but stopped after noticing an unusual taste, authorities said. She then collapsed while leaving the restaurant and later woke up in the hospital with no recollection of how she got there.
Investigators determined that the tea had been laced with a benzodiazepine, a class of sedative drugs, prosecutors said. The victim was hospitalized for several days and is now recovering.
Leonia police received information about the suspected poisoning on Sept. 11, while the victim was still being treated. The department notified the prosecutor’s office, launching a joint investigation involving its Major Crimes Unit and Robbery-Homicide Division.
Bacani was charged on Oct. 14 and arrested the following day by detectives from the prosecutor’s office and Leonia police outside her Hackensack residence.
She was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending her first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court.
The investigation also involved assistance from Fort Lee police and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
