TEANECK, NJ — A Route 4 crash turned into a bizarre shooting investigation Friday night after authorities discovered one of the people involved had been shot in the hand.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office is leading the investigation with Teaneck police after multiple reports of a crash came in around 9:15 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Route 4, according to Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Jeff Angermeyer.
Officers found three people at the scene, including a person with a gunshot wound to the left hand.
The victim was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and remained hospitalized Sunday, Angermeyer said.
But what happened before, during or after the crash remains a mystery.
Angermeyer described the incident as "unusual." The Prosecutor’s Office's Robbery-Homicide Division was notified and began working with Teaneck police, with assistance from the Bergen County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities have not said who was shot, who was driving or how the gunshot and crash were connected.
They also have not said whether anyone was arrested or whether the three people knew one another.
The investigation remains active, and authorities had released no additional details as of Sunday.
