PARAMUS, NJ — A Brooklyn man accused of stuffing nearly $2,200 worth of clothing into three rolling suitcases allegedly took off from a Paramus Marshalls, sprinted across Route 17 and finally plunged into a brook to escape police.
Maki J. Davis, 22, was arrested Friday after allegedly stealing from the Marshalls at 545 Route 17 South, according to Paramus police.
Police received a shoplifting report around 11:30 a.m. Employees said Davis had loaded three large rolling suitcases with clothing.
An officer then allegedly watched him wheel the packed suitcases straight past the registers without paying.
When officers moved in, Davis allegedly ditched the luggage and bolted through the parking lot, trying to hide between parked cars.
He then allegedly made a run for a Dodge Charger, but the car took off without him.
So Davis kept running.
Police said he crossed Route 17, made his way behind a Tesla dealership and headed down an embankment into Sprout Brook.
Officers followed him into the water and arrested him, according to police.
The abandoned suitcases contained 56 pieces of clothing worth a combined $2,197.42, police said.
Davis was charged with shoplifting/organized retail theft, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest by flight and criminal trespass, a petty disorderly persons offense.
