EDGEWATER, NJ — A flooded Bergen County parking lot filled with cars during last weekend’s nor’easter, prompting officials to investigate whether some vehicles were deliberately driven into the floodwaters in an apparent insurance fraud scheme.

Edgewater officials said cars appeared in the flooded lot at the Market Square Mall on River Road as the storm battered the region.

Town Administrator Greg Franz stressed that the allegations remain under investigation but said officials monitoring the area noticed vehicles arriving and later found social media videos appearing to show cars being intentionally driven into the flooded area.

"These vehicles didn't accidentally end up in this water," Franz told PIX11.

Franz said the parking lot is a known flood zone and that local police, the New Jersey Attorney General's Office fraud unit and the state Department of Banking and Insurance are aware of the videos and investigating.

"No victims of a crime to investigate however, local police and the NJ AG fraud unit, NJ Dept of Banking and Insurance, are aware of the social media video posts," Franz told NorthJersey.com.

The alleged activity occurred as the first nor'easter of the season brought coastal flooding, strong winds and downed trees across New Jersey.

Despite the dramatic flooding at the mall property, officials said the flooding was isolated to state-owned property along the Hudson River.

River Road itself did not flood, Franz said, and no motorists had to be rescued from flooded roadways.

The Edgewater Fire Department did have to conduct a rescue operation at the nearby Comfort Inn Motel after a tidal surge from the Hudson River flooded the property and blocked the hotel's main entrance.

Using its high-water rescue truck, firefighters evacuated about 40 guests from the motel.

Officials are continuing to review video and other information related to the vehicles that appeared in the flooded parking lot.
