BERGEN COUNTY, N.J. — Rabbi Andrew Markowitz has been named the new chair of the Bergen County High School Admissions Committee, taking over after Rabbi Beni Krohn led the committee for the past four years.

Rabbi Markowitz has been involved with the committee since its inception and serves as president of the Rabbinical Council of Bergen County alongside his role as rabbi of Congregation Shomrei Torah in Fair Lawn.

The leadership transition comes after another admissions season in which more than 99 percent of Bergen County eighth-graders received an on-time acceptance. The committee also reported that every eighth-grade graduate of a Bergen County yeshiva was accepted to a high school for the 5786 school year.

The committee credited cooperation between elementary and high school leadership for the results.

Rabbi Markowitz takes over as the committee continues to emphasize collaboration between parents and schools, as well as keeping an open mind about multiple high school options.

In a message to the community, the committee said those two factors can help families approach the admissions process with greater confidence and less anxiety while increasing the likelihood of finding the right fit for each student.

Rabbi Krohn was thanked for his leadership, communication and work on behalf of Bergen County families during his four years as chair.

The committee said the transition was planned with continuity in mind and expressed confidence that Rabbi Markowitz would provide a seamless transition.

Rabbi Markowitz is also coming into the new role following a significant personal act of giving. He recently donated one of his kidneys through Renewal.

The Bergen County High School Admissions Committee includes Rabbi Markowitz, Rabbi Krohn, Rabbi Zev Goldberg, Rabbi Chaim Poupko and Rabbi Kenny Schiowitz, along with Dr. Rebecca Eliason, Becky Katz, David Rauch, Menachem Schnaidman and Suzy Schwartz.
