TEANECK, N.J. — Teaneck’s new police chief Seth Kriegel made his first public social media appearance in the job Tuesday, appearing in a photograph from a High Holiday security meeting at the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office with law enforcement partners and Jewish community leaders.

The Teaneck Police Department (TPD) posted about its participation in the meeting, focused on safety and preparedness ahead of the Jewish holidays. Kriegel appears in the photograph.

The post came on Kriegel’s first day as chief, one day after former Chief Andrew R. McGurr retired following more than 33 years with the department.

But Kriegel enters the job with questions about his handling of antisemitism.

As previously reported, earlier this year, while McGurr was out on leave, Kriegel met with members of a Jewish nonprofit to discuss working with police on antisemitism complaints.

The group offered to immediately report complaints to TPD, help gather surveillance footage and turn its findings over to police. Kriegel instead sought sole personal discretion over whether complaints would be investigated and opposed the group conducting its own fact-finding, according to people familiar with the discussions.

He also demanded that the organization not go over his head to the Bergen County Sheriff's Office, the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office or the New Jersey Office of Attorney General if he personally decided not to investigate a complaint, they said.

The organization ultimately maintained that it would report complaints to TPD, conduct its own fact-finding and provide its findings to police, while retaining the ability to escalate matters to the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office or New Jersey Attorney General’s Office if necessary.

Now, as Kriegel begins his tenure, his first social media appearance comes at a meeting centered on Jewish security, while his earlier dispute with the Jewish organization remains part of the backdrop as he takes command.
