HACKENSACK, N.J. — A parolee who served more than six years in prison for killing a Jewish couple in a drug-fueled Hudson Valley crash is back behind bars after Hackensack police allegedly caught him burglarizing vehicles at a luxury apartment complex.
Matthew D. Sindone, 33, was arrested Aug. 16 after police responded to the Excelsior II on Prospect Avenue shortly before dawn and found him allegedly fighting with a security guard and a vehicle owner.
According to Hackensack police, Sindone was allegedly carrying items taken from vehicles that had been burglarized inside the parking garage.
He was charged with robbery and burglary and transported to the Bergen County Jail. A Superior Court judge later denied his initial request for pretrial release.
Sindone is a New York parolee who was released from state prison in November 2024 after serving more than six years for aggravated vehicular homicide in connection with a 2017 crash that killed Neil and Aline Block, a married Jewish couple from New City, N.Y.
Prosecutors said Sindone ran a red light at the intersection of Route 304 and Goebel Road in New City on June 4, 2017, while under the influence of drugs and slammed into the Blocks’ Toyota Camry.
Sindone admitted using Xanax and Klonopin in the hours before the crash, prosecutors said. A subsequent analysis of his blood found 1,500 nanograms per milliliter of Xanax, which prosecutors described as an extremely high level indicative of impairment. Officers also found Xanax in his pocket.
He pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide and was sentenced to four to 12 years in state prison.
The deaths devastated the Rockland County Jewish community. The Blocks, Neil 69 and Aline 68, had moved from the Bronx to New City and were remembered by relatives as having lived the American Dream.
Their funeral was held at Temple Beth Sholom in New City, with burial at Cedar Park Cemetery in Paramus.
Sindone’s latest arrest is not his first run-in with Bergen County authorities since his release.
Court records show he was arrested in Wallington on May 19 on a trespassing charge. Three days later, Maywood police arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence, resulting in multiple traffic summonses.
Sindone is no longer listed on the Bergen County Jail inmate roster, and his whereabouts could not be determined from the information provided.
The Hackensack investigation remains active. The new charges are allegations, and Sindone is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
