FAIR LAWN, N.J. — Fair Lawn officials issued a systemwide boil-water advisory Monday after a water main break caused some customers to lose water or experience a significant drop in pressure.

The break occurred at 542 Wagaraw Road near the Passaic River, according to a notice sent to residents shortly before 3 p.m.

Officials said the loss of pressure created a potential threat to the quality of the water supply, prompting the precautionary advisory while the water is tested.

Until further notice, residents should use bottled water or bring tap water to a rolling boil for at least one minute and allow it to cool before using it.

The precaution applies to drinking water as well as water used to prepare food, mix baby formula, wash fruits and vegetables, make ice, brush teeth and wash dishes.

Residents were also advised not to swallow tap water while showering or bathing and to give pets boiled and cooled water.

Officials said home water filters should not be used as a substitute for boiling or bottled water because most do not adequately protect against microorganisms.

Residents should also discard any uncooked food, beverages or ice made with tap water during the advisory.

Fair Lawn officials said crews are working to restore water quality and will provide updates when testing determines the supply is safe.
