HACKENSACK, N.J. — Seven vehicles erupted in flames early Wednesday after a utility pole came crashing down during severe overnight storms, igniting live power lines and forcing firefighters to wait until electricity was shut off before battling the blaze, officials said.

The fire broke out around 4:45 a.m. near Prospect Avenue and Berry Street, where Hackensack firefighters responded to reports of a utility pole and power lines on fire.

When crews arrived, they found a dangerous scene. Live electrical wires prevented firefighters from immediately attacking the flames, allowing the fire to spread from the downed power lines to seven parked vehicles.

Video released by the Hackensack Fire Department showed multiple cars engulfed in flames as smoke and fire lit up the predawn sky. A fallen utility pole could be seen stretched across the roadway.

Firefighters remained on standby until PSE&G crews arrived and cut power to the affected lines, eliminating the electrical hazard.

Once the power was shut off, firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze before it could spread further.

No injuries were reported.

The incident also caused power outages extending as far as University Plaza Drive and Hackensack Avenue, according to community members.

Authorities have not determined what caused the utility pole to fall, though residents told officials they believe the overnight storms that swept through parts of New Jersey and the tri-state area were likely responsible.

The storms brought heavy rain, strong winds and lightning to portions of Bergen County Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, leaving behind scattered power outages and storm damage.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the utility pole collapse.
