TEANECK, N.J. — A Guatemalan man accused of fleeing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents crashed his pickup truck into a parked vehicle and utility pole Sunday, knocking down live wires and sparking a major emergency response, authorities said.

The crash happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. on July 26, when Teaneck police received multiple 911 calls reporting a vehicle had slammed into a utility pole.

One of the callers identified himself as an ICE agent, according to Teaneck police.

Officers responding to the scene found two damaged vehicles, a snapped utility pole and wires scattered across the roadway. ICE agents were also at the scene when police arrived, according to Police Chief Andrew McGurr.

Investigators determined the driver of a 2017 Toyota Tacoma was traveling west when he allegedly attempted to flee pursuing ICE agents.

The driver lost control and crashed into a parked 2026 Nissan Rogue near the utility pole, police said. The impact pushed the Nissan into the pole, causing it to snap and sending wires down onto the roadway and other vehicles.

The crash created a dangerous situation for a person inside one of the parked vehicles struck by the falling wires. The occupant was forced to remain inside the vehicle for about an hour while waiting for PSE&G crews to arrive and secure the area.

The driver of the Toyota complained of head pain following the collision but was evaluated at the scene and declined further medical treatment. No other injuries were reported.

The Department of Homeland Security identified the driver as Luis Angel Cifuentes Rodas of Guatemala.

“He illegally entered the U.S. at an unknown time and place. All of his claims will be heard by a Justice Department immigration judge, and he will receive full due process,” a DHS spokesperson said in a statement.

Cifuentes Rodas was arrested by ICE agents at the scene following the crash, according to authorities. He was also issued motor vehicle summonses for reckless driving and driving on a sidewalk, McGurr said.

The incident brought together local police, ICE agents and utility crews as officials worked to clear the damaged vehicles, remove hazards and restore safety to the area.

The immigration case will proceed through the Justice Department’s immigration court system, where Cifuentes Rodas will have the opportunity to present his claims before a judge.
