FAIR LAWN, N.J. — Fair Lawn police had a blunt message for parents Friday night as roughly 200 high school-aged teens reportedly bounced from one house party to another: They need to take responsibility for their own kids.

"Attention, parents! If your high school-aged child is out right now, there’s a good chance they’re part of the 200 kids bouncing from one house party to another," the department wrote in a social media post on Oct. 30.

"Do everyone a favor tonight and know where your kids are, who they’re with, and what they’re doing. A little parenting goes a long way. Thanks!"

The department then added a pointed explanation for the warning, signing off with:

"(We are dealing with Medical’s and domestics and drunks we don’t have time to parent them)."

The message came on Mischief Night, the traditional evening before Halloween when teenagers and children sometimes head out for pranks and gatherings.

Fair Lawn was not the only Bergen County town dealing with large groups of young people that night.

Around 10:21 p.m., a large group of teens was reported near Harristown and Radburn roads in Glen Rock, where police reportedly broke up the gathering.

About an hour earlier, approximately 30 teens were reported on Danna Way in Saddle Brook.

Police did not provide further details about the incidents or say whether any arrests were made.

The department's message was clear: Parents should know where their children are, who they are with and what they are doing, rather than leaving police to handle their supervision.
