ENGLEWOOD, N.J. — A 42-year-old man has been jailed more than two months after allegedly strangling a victim, slamming their head into a wall and smashing their cellphone during a violent confrontation in front of children at an Englewood home.

Paul R. Martin was taken into custody and booked into the Bergen County Jail on Sunday, Oct. 25, following an alleged assault that occurred Aug. 23 at a residence on Rock Creek Terrace.

Englewood police responded to the home around 10 p.m. that August night after receiving a report of a disturbance, according to Detective Capt. Renee LaRaia.

Martin had already fled by the time officers arrived.

Investigators said the confrontation began as a verbal argument before Martin allegedly turned violent, forcing the victim's head into a wall and strangling them.

Police said Martin then grabbed a cellphone from the victim's hand and broke it.

The alleged assault took place in front of the victim's minor children, prompting authorities to include a child endangerment charge.

The victim did not require medical treatment, police said.

Martin allegedly fled the scene in a vehicle that did not belong to him before officers arrived.

He was charged with robbery, aggravated assault by strangulation, criminal restraint, theft of a stolen motor vehicle and endangering the welfare of children.

Authorities did not disclose the relationship between Martin and the victim or explain the circumstances that led to his arrest more than two months after the incident.

Bergen County Jail records show Martin was lodged at the facility Oct. 25.

The allegations remain pending in court.
