ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. — A Chevrolet Tahoe crashed into an Elmwood Park gas station Friday morning, landing on its side between the pumps and another vehicle being fueled, sending two people to the hospital.

Police responded to the Delta Gas station on River Drive around 10:51 a.m. Oct. 23 after receiving reports that an SUV had crashed into the gas pumps, according to Elmwood Park Police Chief Michael Foligno.

Officers arrived to find a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe lodged on its side between the pumps and a vehicle that was being fueled at the time.

Smoke was coming from the Tahoe, prompting authorities to immediately shut down the gas pumps as a precaution.

The driver of the vehicle being fueled and a gas station attendant suffered minor injuries. Both were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

The Tahoe's driver, a 59-year-old Fairfield man, was treated at the scene and released.

Investigators believe the driver may have been experiencing a medical episode when the crash occurred. Police are also examining whether he was attempting to avoid a pedestrian in the roadway.

Authorities have not said whether the pedestrian was struck or whether any charges or summonses were issued.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
