FORT LEE, NJ – A near-collision between two vehicles on the George Washington Bridge was caught on surveillance video shortly before a 46-year-old Con Edison worker was fatally shot in the head Tuesday evening, giving investigators a possible lead in what they suspect was a deadly case of road rage.
Port Authority police are reviewing footage showing Koran Irvin, of Rockland County, nearly colliding with another driver on a ramp leading to the bridge's westbound upper level shortly after 7 p.m.
Investigators believe the close call may have sparked a confrontation between the drivers before someone in the other vehicle opened fire as both continued toward New Jersey.
Irvin, who was off duty from his job at Con Edison, was driving a blue Volkswagen Golf when he was struck in the head by gunfire.
His vehicle subsequently crashed on the westbound upper level, prompting emergency calls that initially reported a single-vehicle accident.
"PAPD received reports of a one-vehicle crash on the westbound upper level of the George Washington Bridge," a Port Authority police spokesperson said. "Responding officers found the driver with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head."
Irvin was rushed to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The other vehicle fled the scene, and police had not released a description of the suspect or the vehicle involved as of Wednesday morning.
No arrests had been announced.
Con Edison confirmed Irvin was an employee and issued a statement mourning his death.
"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a member of the Con Edison family in this senseless act of violence. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved him," a company spokesperson said.
The shooting brought traffic on one of the nation's busiest crossings to a standstill during the evening rush hour.
Police shut down the westbound upper level for approximately six hours while investigators examined the scene and collected evidence. The lanes reopened around 1 a.m. Wednesday.
No other injuries were reported.
Authorities have not confirmed what sparked the shooting, but the surveillance footage showing the near-collision has made road rage a central focus of the investigation.
The gunman remained at large as the investigation continued Wednesday.
