PARAMUS, N.J. — A 31-year-old Bronx woman was killed on Route 17 in Paramus after a driver towing a U-Haul trailer allegedly struck her and ran her over while fleeing an earlier collision, authorities said.
Krisiann Reyes Rivera was a passenger in a 2015 Buick Enclave involved in a crash with a 2024 Acura ZDX towing a U-Haul trailer in the southbound lanes near Westfield Garden State Plaza around 5:09 p.m. Monday, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
After the initial collision, Rivera got out of the Buick and approached the Acura as its driver appeared to be leaving the scene, investigators said. She struck one of the Acura's windows, according to prosecutors.
The driver, identified as Estuardo G. Rodriguez, 31, of Tarrytown, New York, then accelerated, striking Rivera and knocking her to the ground before the trailer's rear tires ran over her, according to court documents.
Rivera suffered severe injuries and was taken by ambulance to Hackensack University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Rodriguez allegedly fled toward Garden State Plaza Boulevard, but witnesses followed him and blocked his vehicle in traffic about a half-mile from the crash scene. They flagged down a Paramus police officer, who detained him, prosecutors said.
Officers reported smelling alcohol on Rodriguez's breath and observing that his eyes were bloodshot. He refused field sobriety tests and was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to court documents. Investigators also determined that his driver's license was suspended.
Rodriguez faces charges of second-degree death by auto, second-degree knowingly leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, third-degree endangering an injured victim and third-degree driving while suspended in a collision resulting in death. He also faces motor vehicle offenses, including driving while intoxicated.
He was taken to the Bergen County Jail pending his first court appearance in Superior Court in Hackensack.
The crash shut down all southbound lanes of Route 17 near Garden State Plaza for hours Monday evening, with traffic diverted onto Route 4 as investigators worked at the scene.
The investigation is being conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office and Paramus Police Department, with assistance from the Bergen County Fatal Accident Task Force. The charges are allegations, and Rodriguez is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
