PARAMUS, NJ — Two Bergen County teenagers were arrested Monday after police said they fled Garden State Plaza in a stolen car and crashed into a tractor-trailer and a Paramus police vehicle on Route 17.
A Paramus police sergeant spotted the 2013 Hyundai Elantra driving “up and down the aisles” of the Garden State Plaza parking lot shortly before 12:30 p.m., Police Chief Robert M. Guidetti said.
A records check showed the car had been reported stolen in Wallington.
The 17-year-old driver sped onto Route 17 south after spotting the officer and allegedly tried to evade police by driving along the shoulder, Guidetti said.
The Hyundai struck a tractor-trailer and a Paramus police vehicle before the driver lost control and crashed into the concrete divider separating the highway’s northbound and southbound lanes near Rochelle Park, police said.
The driver then tried to escape through a rear passenger door but was caught by Paramus police and a Bergen County sheriff’s officer, authorities said.
A 16-year-old passenger was also arrested. Police did not say whether anyone was injured.
Officers said the teens had disabled the vehicle’s ignition and were operating it with a USB cable. Police also found burglary tools inside the car.
The driver was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of burglary tools, aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a police officer and eluding, along with several motor vehicle summonses.
The passenger was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of burglary tools.
Police said the teens are from Wallington and Hackensack but did not specify which teen lives in each town.
