BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A Bergen County cop who was arrested after prosecutors accused him of lying under oath during an internal affairs investigation has now been fired, The Bergen Record reported Tuesday.

Cory J. Havens, 32, a former Palisades Park police officer, was officially terminated by the Borough Council on Aug. 25, nearly seven months after his arrest.

Havens was arrested Feb. 3 in Hackensack and charged with fourth-degree false swearing.

The case stemmed from an administrative investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office’s Confidential Investigations Unit after the matter was referred to prosecutors by the Palisades Park Police Department.

During the investigation, Havens allegedly provided false statements to Bergen County detectives while under oath, according to prosecutors.

He was immediately suspended without pay following his arrest.

Now, he’s out of a job.

“Officer Havens’ employment was terminated by the borough of Palisades Park following an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office that was initiated due to a referral from the Palisades Park Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit,” borough spokesperson Sara Rossi said. “Because this is a personnel matter, we can make no further comment at this time.”

According to documents, evidence in the case included eyewitness accounts, Havens’ statements, video footage and phone messages.

Havens was released following his arrest and remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

His attorney, John Bruno, did not respond to a request for comment.

But Havens’ history with Palisades Park goes back nearly a decade.

He was hired by the borough in 2017 as an information technology employee. In 2019, he sued Palisades Park, alleging he had been wrongfully terminated because of his sexual orientation.

Havens claimed the borough’s stated budgetary reason for firing him was a pretext for retaliation.

The lawsuit was settled, with Havens returning to full-time borough employment as part of the agreement. He later received a $75,000 settlement from the borough.

He eventually became a Palisades Park police officer.

Now, that job is gone.

Havens’ arrest was the sixth involving a Palisades Park police officer in the past decade, according to previous reporting.

The false-swearing charge remains an allegation. Prosecutors have said Havens is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
