FAIR LAWN, N.J. — Fair Lawn drivers and pedestrians should take extra care tonight as Route 208 lane closures could push more traffic onto local streets.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation is warning motorists to slow down, use caution and expect delays as crews work on the Route 208 bridge project.

The left lanes in both directions of Route 208 will close from 9 p.m. Leil Shabbos until 6 a.m. Shabbos morning as crews install construction barriers and restripe the roadway.

The work falls over Shabbos and Yom Tov, when Orthodox Jews won't be driving. But that could also mean more drivers who are unfamiliar with Fair Lawn using residential streets to get around the Route 208 work.

For those walking to and from shuls and homes tonight, that means it may be worth taking an extra look before crossing a street, especially on darker residential roads.

Drivers cutting through neighborhoods may not know the usual traffic patterns, may be looking for a way around Route 208 and may not be expecting large numbers of pedestrians.

The $10.4 million project is replacing the CR 507/Maple Avenue Bridge over Route 208 in Glen Rock and Fair Lawn. Construction is expected to continue through fall 2028.

Tonight, the message is simple: If you’re walking, keep an eye out for cars. If you’re driving, slow down and watch for people on the road.
