ENGLEWOOD, N.J. — Englewood Hospital has earned advanced certification as a thrombectomy-capable stroke center from The Joint Commission, recognizing its ability to perform minimally invasive procedures to remove blood clots from the brain in some of the most serious strokes.

The hospital announced the certification Monday, saying it builds on its designation as a primary stroke center, which it has held since 2005.

The new certification recognizes the hospital’s ability to provide endovascular thrombectomy, a procedure in which physicians remove a clot blocking blood flow in the brain.

“This certification reflects the strength of the stroke program we have built at Englewood Hospital,” said Dr. Justin Marcus, medical director of stroke at Englewood Hospital. “It recognizes the expertise, technology, and coordinated care our team brings to stroke patients every day — and our commitment to providing advanced care close to home.”

Thrombectomy-capable stroke centers must meet standards for performing endovascular procedures and providing specialized care afterward, including having the necessary clinical expertise, imaging technology and around-the-clock capabilities.

The certification follows continued investment in Englewood Hospital’s neurointerventional program, including an advanced Siemens biplane imaging system.

The system provides high-resolution, real-time images that allow physicians to navigate the brain’s blood vessels and perform minimally invasive procedures with greater precision.
