BERGENFIELD, NJ — An 18-year-old New Milford man was stabbed twice in the chest Friday night after intervening in what police say was a planned attack at a Bergenfield park.
Bergenfield police responded to Veterans Memorial Park on New Bridge Road around 8:44 p.m. Aug. 28 and found the victim suffering from two stab wounds, Capt. William Duran said.
The victim was treated by the Bergenfield Volunteer Ambulance Corps and taken to Hackensack University Medical Center in stable condition with injuries that appeared to be non-life-threatening.
According to police, two Bergenfield juveniles had planned to attack a 17-year-old Dumont boy following a pickup basketball game. The New Milford man intervened when the teens began assaulting the intended target and was stabbed, police said.
The suspects fled in a gray 2009 Nissan Altima but were quickly identified and taken into custody.

Both were detained at the Bergen County Juvenile Detention Center pending proceedings in Bergen County Superior Court Family Division.
