TEANECK, N.J. — Teaneck-based Cognizant is offering affected customers identity theft protection after a data breach that may have exposed Social Security numbers and other personal information.

The breach occurred on or around April 21 and was reported Aug. 18, according to Claim Depot, a company that tracks potential class-action lawsuits. Cognizant subsequently sent letters to individuals whose information may have been affected.

“While we have no reason to believe that your information was misused, we thought it prudent to make this notification,” Cognizant said in the letter, adding that it “deeply regret[s] this incident and any inconvenience” caused.

A cyber-extortion group identified as CoinbaseCartel has claimed responsibility for the breach, according to Claim Depot.

Cognizant is offering affected individuals 24 months of credit monitoring and up to $1 million in identity theft insurance through IDX, a company specializing in data breach recovery.

Customers can also place a free security freeze on their credit reports through Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. The credit bureaus may require identifying information including a full name, date of birth, Social Security number and proof of current address.

Cognizant emphasized that there was currently no evidence that affected information had been misused.

“Again, at this time, there is no evidence that your information has been misused,” the company said. “However, we encourage you to take full advantage of this service offering.”

Affected customers with questions can contact IDX at 1-800-939-4170, with representatives available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday.
