TEANECK, N.J. — Teaneck Deputy Mayor Elie Katz was the only Jewish Teaneck elected official invited to a meet-and-greet with New Jersey Lt. Governor and Secretary of State Dr. Dale G. Caldwell ahead of the upcoming High Holidays.

The gathering brought together Jewish community leaders from across New Jersey for a discussion with Caldwell on issues affecting the community and the importance of continued engagement between state government and Jewish leadership. As part of the gathering, the group presented Caldwell with a special mezuzah for his office.

Katz was joined by Lakewood Township Committeeman Meir Lichtenstein, Chanie Jacobowitz, vice president of Government Affairs and Compliance at Beth Medrash Govoha, Linden community activist Mendy Stern and Rabbi Ari Herson, who represented his father, Rabbi Mendy Herson, dean of Chabad of Greater New Jersey.

The gathering was arranged by longtime community leader and law enforcement chaplain Rabbi Abe Friedman.

Katz said the meeting was particularly productive and praised Caldwell's approach to public service.

“Very productive meeting with Lieutenant Governor Dr. Dale G. Caldwell. This was my first time meeting him, and I must say, New Jersey is fortunate to have him representing us,” Katz said. “He is a man of faith and principles, with a true ‘get it done’ attitude, even when faced with bureaucracy.”

Katz said the conversation focused on safety and security across New Jersey, specific needs in Teaneck and opportunities to bring together the public, private and nonprofit sectors to better serve residents.

“I look forward to working together and continuing the conversation,” Katz said.

Lichtenstein spoke during the gathering, addressing Caldwell on behalf of the Lakewood community and highlighting the importance of maintaining an open dialogue with state leadership.

Jacobowitz also addressed the lieutenant governor, discussing the relationship between government and the Jewish community.

The gathering concluded with community leaders presenting Caldwell with the mezuzah, which he will display at his office.
