FAIR LAWN, N.J. — A Fair Lawn woman has been arrested after police say she struck a mother and her 5-year-old child in a Tuesday morning hit-and-run that left both victims hospitalized.

Maritza Salazar-Perez, 67, of Fair Lawn, was arrested following the crash at about 6:30 a.m. at Broadway and Fair Lawn Parkway, near Dunkin’ Donuts, police said.

The 47-year-old mother and child were crossing Broadway when they were struck. The driver fled the scene, according to investigators.

Both victims were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center and were listed in stable condition.

Salazar-Perez faces multiple charges, including leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury and endangering an injured victim. She was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance in Superior Court.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Task Force assisted Fair Lawn police with the investigation.

Detectives focused heavily on the area around the crosswalk where the mother and child were crossing Broadway. Authorities have not released information about the vehicle allegedly involved in the crash.

The incident has renewed concerns among nearby residents about pedestrian safety along the busy roadway.
