BERGENFIELD, N.J. — A detached two-car garage went up in flames just before 6 a.m. Wednesday on South Woodside Avenue, prompting a fast response from Bergenfield firefighters and temporary evacuations of nearby homes.

The Bergenfield Fire Department’s chief and responding police officers arrived to find the garage fully engulfed in fire. Engine 3 arrived shortly afterward and deployed two attack lines, launching an aggressive attack that prevented the flames from spreading to surrounding structures.

Firefighters from Bergenfield Engines 1, 2 and 3 worked alongside mutual aid crews from Dumont Engine 5, Englewood Truck 2 and New Milford Tower 31 to reach deep-seated pockets of fire and check for further extension.

Several nearby homes were temporarily evacuated until the fire was brought under control.

A Teaneck Fire Department squad company stood by at Alert Fire Company to provide additional coverage for calls in Bergenfield while crews battled the blaze.

BVAC provided firefighters with water and clean towels and remained on standby in case anyone became injured.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
