FAIR LAWN, N.J. — Fair Lawn is preparing to overhaul its garbage and recycling rules, with a new ordinance that would update everything from collection hours to definitions for waste and recycling materials.

The Borough Council is scheduled to introduce the new “Solid Waste and Recycling” ordinance during its Aug. 11 meeting.

Under the proposed rules, garbage and recycling collections would not be permitted to begin before 7 a.m. or continue after 6 p.m.

The ordinance would repeal Fair Lawn’s existing solid waste ordinance and replace it with a more comprehensive set of regulations covering how residents dispose of household waste and recyclable materials.

The new ordinance includes definitions for solid waste items, containers and recyclable materials, along with guidelines governing their disposal and collection.

The council’s work session is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, followed by the regular meeting at 8 p.m.

The ordinance is expected to receive its first reading Aug. 11, with a public hearing and potential final adoption scheduled for Sept. 29.

Residents will have an opportunity to comment before the ordinance is adopted.

The proposed changes come as Fair Lawn continues to update borough regulations governing everyday services and neighborhood quality-of-life issues.

For residents, one of the most noticeable changes could be the proposed collection-hour restrictions, which would establish a clear window for when garbage and recycling crews can operate.
