HACKENSACK, N.J. — Hackensack University Medical Center has once again claimed the top spot in New Jersey, earning recognition as the state’s No. 1 hospital while its cancer program was ranked among the best in the country.
U.S. News & World Report named Hackensack University Medical Center the No. 1 hospital in New Jersey for 2026-2027 and recognized its cancer program as the only nationally ranked cancer program in the state.
The hospital’s cancer program ranked No. 38 nationally, No. 6 in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area and first in New Jersey.
The recognition places Hackensack University Medical Center among the top hospitals nationwide across multiple specialties, with the hospital ranking in the top 10 percent nationally in seven adult specialties, including cancer, cardiology, neurology, orthopedics and urology.
For patients across Bergen County, the recognition highlights the continued growth of Hackensack Meridian Health’s flagship medical center as a destination for advanced care close to home.
“Being recognized as New Jersey’s best cancer center program reflects decades of commitment to advancing cancer care through innovation, research and collaboration,” said Dr. Andre Goy, chairman and chief physician officer of the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center.
Goy pointed to the center’s work in areas including CAR T-cell therapy, bone marrow transplantation and clinical trials as examples of its efforts to expand treatment options for patients.
Hackensack University Medical Center also ranked among the nation’s best in several other specialties:
Cancer: #38 nationally
Neurology & Neurosurgery: #34 nationally
Urology: #32 nationally
Orthopedics: #14 nationally
Pulmonology & Lung Surgery: #36 nationally
Diabetes & Endocrinology: #43 nationally
Cardiology and Heart & Vascular Surgery: #45 nationally
The recognition was part of U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Hospitals rankings, which evaluate hospitals using independently reported data, including quality measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
Several other Hackensack Meridian Health facilities also received recognition, including JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, which ranked among the nation’s top rehabilitation hospitals for the eighth consecutive year, and Jersey Shore University Medical Center, which was named one of the top hospitals in New Jersey.
Hackensack Meridian Health CEO Robert C. Garrett said the rankings reflect the work of physicians, nurses and staff across the network.
“From being home to New Jersey’s top-ranked cancer program and No. 1 hospital, to earning national recognition across multiple specialties, these achievements demonstrate our unwavering commitment to clinical excellence,” Garrett said.
For Bergen County residents, the latest rankings reinforce Hackensack University Medical Center’s role as one of the region’s leading centers for specialized medical care.
