TEANECK, N.J. — Amrit Ramjattan wants voters to see him as the engineer in the room.
The longtime Teaneck resident, electrical engineer and former transit executive is running with Avi Berliner and Sharon L. Kolb as ONE TEAM ONE TEANECK.
Ramjattan has served on the Board of Adjustment and said he attends most Township Council meetings.
His campaign message starts with money.
Ramjattan said the township should look at reducing the scope of capital projects, canceling projects that are not essential and finding shared-service opportunities. He also suggested bulk purchasing as another way to cut costs.
He wants Teaneck to use its business districts more aggressively, including temporary tax relief and community events to attract businesses.
Development is another major issue.
Ramjattan said the Crossroads proposal at the former Stop & Shop site is “not perfect,” but argued that Teaneck has to deal with state affordable-housing requirements and the possibility of a builder’s-remedy lawsuit.
His position is that the township should maintain control over development rather than allow the courts or developers to dictate what happens.
Ramjattan also focused heavily on infrastructure and climate issues.
He said Teaneck needs better mapping, coordination and planning when it comes to drainage and flooding. He pointed to green infrastructure and LEED standards as tools the township can use.
His message to residents was also about how they deal with each other.
“Talk,” he said, emphasizing the importance of communication and First Amendment rights while urging residents not to turn political disagreements into personal fights.
Ramjattan’s broader campaign pitch is less about monuments or single development projects and more about making decisions he says are practical.
For the engineer-turned-candidate, the message is simple: control costs, plan ahead and keep Teaneck moving.
