TENAFLY, N.J. — PopUp Bagels is coming to Bergen County, with its first location in the county set to open this fall at 6-8 Washington Street in Tenafly.

The popular bagel chain will bring its signature bagels and schmears to the town, including a limited kosher selection under National Kosher Supervision, supervised by Rabbi Aaron D. Mehlman.

The kosher certification will cover the shop's bagels, which are pareve but not Pas Yisroel.

Only two schmears will be certified: plain cream cheese and scallion cream cheese. Both are regular dairy and are not Cholov Yisroel.

Other specialty, seasonal and collaboration schmears will not be covered by the certification.

For kosher consumers, however, the certification itself may be an important consideration.

National Kosher Supervision does not appear on the Chicago Rabbinical Council's current list of acceptable kashrus agencies. The cRc advises consumers to contact it regarding certifications that do not appear on its list and says consumers should research unfamiliar kosher certifications and consult their rabbi when necessary.

The cRc also states that an agency's absence from its list does not, by itself, mean that the agency has been determined to be substandard.

That means kosher consumers should not necessarily assume that the Tenafly location's certification represents the same level of supervision or standards as other hechsheirim commonly relied upon in Bergen County. Consumers who have questions about whether the certification meets their own standards should consult their rabbi.

PopUp Bagels has expanded rapidly across the region, building its brand around freshly baked bagels and schmears served separately.

The Tenafly shop will be the company's first in Bergen County. An official opening date and hours have not yet been announced.
