FAIR LAWN, NJ — A worker arriving before dawn to open Fair Lawn’s Hot Bagels spotted heavy smoke coming from the shop and called 911 immediately, helping firefighters quickly get the blaze under control, officials said.

The worker arrived at the Saddle River Road business at about 3:23 a.m. Tuesday and saw smoke coming from the building.

Assistant Fire Chief Marc Palmieri arrived shortly afterward and requested a full first-alarm assignment, bringing 35 firefighters from all four Fair Lawn fire companies to the scene.

Firefighters found flames extending into the walls and ceiling. Crews opened the walls and quickly extinguished the fire, bringing it under control in about 10 minutes, according to the Fire Department.

The Fair Lawn Rescue Squad, Fair Lawn Office of Emergency Management and Fair Lawn Police Department also responded.

The business suffered moderate damage. No one was injured.

“Thankfully, the worker arrived when [he] did and called us,” Palmieri said. “Otherwise, if the alarm was delayed much longer, the results would have been much worse.”

Firefighters cleared the scene by about 5 a.m.

The Fair Lawn Fire Prevention Bureau is investigating the cause of the fire.
