WASHINGTON — North Jersey Rep. Josh Gottheimer is leading a bipartisan-style push by four House Democrats to put the Democratic Socialists of America and socialism itself on the record Monday.
Gottheimer, D-N.J., joined Reps. Hillary Scholten, D-Mich., Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., and Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., in introducing an amendment to a Republican resolution condemning the DSA.
The move comes after Rep. Jeff Crank, R-Colo., introduced his own resolution last week that would force House Democrats to vote on whether to condemn the DSA. Gottheimer and the three other Democrats offered their own version after removing language tied to the controversial SAVE Act, allowing the House to vote directly on condemning socialism and the DSA.
The amendment says socialist ideology has repeatedly led to communist regimes, totalitarian rule and repressive dictatorships, citing the Soviet Union, Mao's China and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia.
It also takes direct aim at the DSA, accusing the group of seeking to abolish capitalism, abolish the Senate and defund police and the military. The resolution also cites a February 2026 DSA statement that “the United States of America has never been a democracy.”
The amendment concludes by calling on the House to “condemn and denounce socialism in all its forms, including the Democratic Socialists of America,” and oppose implementing socialist policies in the United States.
Gottheimer, a conservative Democrat representing New Jersey's 5th Congressional District, has emerged as one of Congress' most outspoken Democratic critics of the DSA and its leaders, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
The resolution gives Democrats an opportunity to make their position clear as the DSA and socialist politics continue to gain prominence in the Democratic Party.
