PARAMUS, N.J. — A new tool at Valley Health System is giving doctors a brighter way to spot bladder cancer.

Valley’s Urologic Oncology Center is now offering Blue Light Cystoscopy with Cysview, an advanced technique designed to help doctors detect bladder cancer that can be difficult to see under standard white light.

Bladder cancer is the 10th leading cause of cancer death in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society. It is more common in men, particularly those over 55.

The warning signs can be easy to notice, including blood in the urine, frequent urination or a sudden, urgent need to go.

During a traditional cystoscopy, a thin scope with a camera is inserted into the bladder so a doctor can look for abnormalities and, when necessary, take a tissue sample for biopsy.

The blue-light technology adds another layer.

About an hour before the procedure, Cysview is placed into the bladder. Cancer cells absorb the medication and glow bright pink when exposed to blue light, making them easier for doctors to identify.

Doctors can switch between white and blue light during the procedure to get a more detailed look at the bladder.

Valley says the technology can be used for patients with suspected low-, intermediate- or high-risk bladder cancer, including patients whose other health conditions may complicate treatment.

The hospital says the approach can also help doctors develop a more comprehensive treatment plan, determine how advanced or aggressive cancer cells may be and potentially allow for less invasive treatment.

For patients, the process is designed to go beyond the procedure itself.

Valley’s urologic oncology nurse navigators help coordinate the surgery, follow-up appointments and ongoing surveillance, helping patients navigate what can otherwise become a complicated cancer-care process.

The procedure is performed as part of same-day surgery under anesthesia, with the goal of allowing patients to return to their normal activities more quickly.
