ENGLEWOOD, NJ — A Hackensack man who police say was caught trespassing at an abandoned Englewood building for the second day in a row allegedly fought with officers trying to arrest him.
Damian Shirley, 35, was spotted around 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 185 W. Englewood Ave., the former Salvation Army property at West Englewood Avenue and Cottage Place, according to Englewood police.
Shirley had been issued a trespassing summons at the property the previous day, police said.
When officers told him he was trespassing again, Shirley allegedly refused to leave. Police said he resisted arrest, threatened officers and assaulted them during the encounter.
The officers were treated at the scene and at Hackensack University Medical Center before being released, police said.
Shirley was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, three counts of resisting arrest, terroristic threats, obstruction and trespassing. The charges were placed on a warrant.
Police said the abandoned property has been the source of ongoing quality-of-life complaints involving drinking, narcotics activity and squatting.
Shirley was turned over to the Bergen County Sheriff's Office at New Bridge Medical Center.
New Jersey court records show Shirley has faced several prior cases in recent years, including prescription or legend drug distribution in 2022, simple assault in 2021 and disorderly conduct charges in 2019 and 2022. More recent cases include public drinking, littering, smoking in public and blocking a sidewalk in 2025. He also faced DWI-related charges in Fort Lee in 2022.
