PARAMUS, N.J. — Paramus has finalized a new tiered stipend system for volunteer firefighters, increasing the amount members can receive based on how many calls they answer each month.

The Borough Council gave final approval Aug. 19 to an ordinance that was reintroduced July 22. The new system builds on an increase approved earlier this year and changes the participation requirements for receiving the monthly allowance.

Under the updated plan, firefighters who respond to at least 50% of calls in a month will receive $1,100. Those responding to 40% to 49% of calls will receive $900, while members responding to 30% to 39% will receive $200.

The $1,100 Tier 1 stipend is an increase from the $1,000 amount approved in June. Previously, members who responded to at least 40% of calls could receive an $800 monthly allowance.

Firefighters must also attend at least two departmental training sessions each month to qualify for the stipend. Approved training at the Bergen County Fire Academy, Bergen County EMS Training Center or another official training center can count toward the requirement with advance approval from a company captain or chief.

Mayor Christopher DiPiazza said the stipend is important to maintaining a strong volunteer department and saving taxpayers money.

“Giving a stipend increase is the least we can do, and we do it enthusiastically,” DiPiazza said in June.

Stipends will be calculated monthly but paid at the end of each calendar quarter.
