PARAMUS, N.J. — Rep. Josh Gottheimer honored 57 North Jersey veterans Wednesday, presenting them with New Jersey State Service Medals during a ceremony recognizing their military service.

The Bergen County congressman used the ceremony to thank the veterans and their families for the sacrifices they made while serving the country.

“This is about you, the 57 that we are recognizing today,” Gottheimer said. “It gives you, it makes you just so proud to be an American to realize the people that stand up and have stood up to protect our flag and our democracy and our freedom.”

Gottheimer said veterans should never have to wonder whether they will receive the care and resources they earned.

“All of you who are here deserve world class care,” he said. “Please know that all of us will fight for you.”

Among those honored was Paramus resident Librado Lombana, who joined the Army at 17 in 1962 and served with the 82nd Brigade Engineers until 1966.

Lombana helped build bridges and infrastructure across the Philippines, Guam, Vietnam and Korea, according to information from Gottheimer’s office.

Gottheimer highlighted Lombana’s story as an example of the sacrifices represented by the 57 veterans receiving medals.

“There's no higher calling than raising your hand and volunteering to serve to protect our flag,” Gottheimer said. “None of you did it for glory, certainly not for the paycheck. You did it because you love our country. And we're willing to put everything on the line to protect your fellow Americans.”

He also recognized the veterans’ families, noting that their sacrifices were part of the veterans’ service.

Gottheimer pledged to continue advocating for veterans in Washington, including for resources, recognition and care.

“I will continue to fight for the resources, recognition, and care you deserve,” he said. “You've earned this medal. It's just one way for your service and sacrifice that we can say thank you.”
