FAIR LAWN, NJ — Fair Lawn residents can once again drink and use tap water without boiling it first after officials lifted a boil water advisory Wednesday afternoon.

The advisory was issued Monday after a water main break at 542 Wagaraw Road caused some customers to lose water or experience a significant drop in water pressure.

The break was repaired Tuesday morning, but the advisory remained in effect while officials waited for testing to confirm the water supply was safe.

At about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, the borough announced that the advisory had been lifted.

“The boil water advisory is lifted and it is no longer necessary to boil your water before using,” the town said.

Officials are still urging residents to take several steps to flush their plumbing and clear any water or ice that may have been affected during the advisory.

Residents should run their faucets for three to five minutes to flush their service connection and interior plumbing. They should also empty and clean automatic ice makers and water chillers.

Residents with hot water heaters set below 113 degrees Fahrenheit should drain and refill them. Homes with water softeners or cartridge filters should run those systems through a regeneration cycle or follow the manufacturer's recommended procedure.

Water reservoirs in tall buildings should also be drained and refilled, where applicable.

The advisory followed Monday's water main break near the Passaic River, which prompted officials to tell residents to use boiled or bottled water for drinking, cooking, preparing food, making ice and brushing their teeth.

The borough apologized for the inconvenience and thanked residents for their patience.
