HACKENSACK, N.J. — An Englewood firefighter who has become a leading advocate for firefighters' mental health was among 20 North Jersey residents honored Friday by Rep. Josh Gottheimer during his annual Fifth District Hometown Heroes ceremony.

John Herrmann of the Englewood Fire Department was recognized for his work as a firefighter and peer support coordinator, providing mental health assistance to firefighters across New Jersey.

"Today, we are here to focus on our neighbors, who, even in all the noise, look for ways to put others above themselves," Gottheimer said during the ceremony at the Hackensack Performing Arts Center. "They all embody our Jersey Values and make our community such a special place to live, work, and raise a family."

Herrmann was one of 20 veterans, first responders, volunteers and community leaders recognized from across New Jersey's Fifth Congressional District.

Other Bergen County honorees included Anthony Pulizzano of Upper Saddle River for his work with Special Olympics New Jersey, Razak Buddha of Teaneck for decades of volunteer service at Holy Name Hospital, Officer Frank Stefanoof Oradell for multiple lifesaving rescues, and Chief Robert Schlossberg of River Edge, the 2025 New Jersey Fire Chief of the Year.

The annual Hometown Heroes program recognizes residents whose volunteerism, public service and leadership have made a lasting impact on their communities.

For Bergen County readers, Herrmann's recognition highlights the often-overlooked role firefighters play beyond emergency calls, including supporting fellow first responders coping with the mental and emotional toll of the job.
