HACKENSACK, N.J. — Bergen County will swear in a new superintendent of elections Tuesday after the New Jersey Senate confirmed Gov. Mikie Sherrill's nomination of Anthony Nicodemo to lead the county's elections office.

Nicodemo, who has spent the past six years with Bergen County's Department of Human Services, will take the oath of office Aug. 4. His term will run through June 23, 2031.

He succeeds Debra Francica, who has led the office since 2021 and oversaw one of the county's biggest election system overhauls in decades.

"Anthony has distinguished himself through his professionalism, integrity and unwavering commitment to serving Bergen County residents," Bergen County Deputy Chief of Staff Derek Sands said. "We are proud to celebrate this next chapter in his public service and know he will continue to serve the people of Bergen County with the same dedication in this important new role."

Also taking the oath Tuesday is Jamie H. Sheehan-Willis, who will begin her second term as deputy superintendent of elections. She first joined the Bergen County Board of Elections in 2013 and has served as deputy superintendent since 2021.

The superintendent of elections works alongside the Bergen County Clerk and the Bergen County Board of Elections as one of three independent agencies responsible for administering elections. The office oversees voter registration, maintains voting machines and poll books, enforces election laws and investigates voting discrepancies.

Nicodemo takes over after several years of significant changes to Bergen County's election system. Under Francica's leadership, the county introduced early voting, electronic poll books and new digital voting machines, replacing equipment that had been in use for roughly three decades.

The transition was not without challenges. During the 2023 election, technical issues with the new voting system, an incorrect results file uploaded to the county website and a shortage of trained poll workers delayed election results into the early morning hours. County officials later expanded poll worker training and streamlined voting procedures ahead of the 2024 election cycle.

"It has truly been a team effort," Francica said, calling her time leading the office "one of the biggest joys of my life."

The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Bergen County Administration Building in Hackensack. Bergen County Superior Court Judge Nicholas Ostuni will administer Nicodemo's oath of office, while District 39 Assemblyman John Azzariti Jr. will swear in Sheehan-Willis.
